Space for Design: How a Laundry Chute Enhances the Architectural Quality of the Bungehuis

In the renovation of monumental buildings, one question always leads: how do you add modern functionality without compromising the character? In Amsterdam’s Bungehuis, now Soho House, a monument from 1934, that balance was achieved through the integration of a Stansz laundry chute. No dominant technology in sight, but a quiet intervention that supports the building.

Anyone who has ever had to redesign the interior of a monumental building knows how challenging the combination of aesthetics, comfort and technical solutions can be. The Bungehuis houses multiple functions across several floors. Without a well-designed internal logistics system, chaos quickly arises: temporary storage areas, carts in corridors, and pressure on elevator capacity.

By choosing a vertical transport system during the renovation, the interior design remained intact. The chute runs invisibly through the building and has loading points on three of the five floors. Used linen goes straight to the basement, where it is stored out of sight.

Improving Architecture by Seamlessly Integrating Technology
The collaboration between Kentie and Partners Architects (Zwanenburg), Salverda Bouw (’t Harde), and Stansz resulted in a building where technology fully serves the design. Where traditional solutions often require compromises in layout or aesthetics, Stansz creates space instead.

Choosing Smart Technology Is Also Choosing Experience
A well-designed system doesn’t impose itself on the building, it supports it. The laundry chute in Soho House is a fitting example.
